Specifically Gauteng and Surrouning areas
When most couples start planning their wedding, they immediately picture a sunny summer’s day. But what if I told you that winter weddings might actually be the best-kept secret in South Africa's wedding scene?
As a photographer who has captured love stories in every season, I’ve seen the magic that winter brings, and honestly, I think it’s time more couples started embracing the cozy weather and romantic atmosphere.
Here’s why you should consider planning your wedding in May, June, July or August.
1. The Golden Light Is Unreal
Let’s start with the obvious: photography.
The light in winter is soft, golden, and lasts just long enough to get those dreamy portraits without the harsh midday sun. No squinting, no sweating, just warm glows and gentle shadows. Photographer heaven.
The sun sets earlier too, which means we don’t need to wait until 6pm to catch golden hour, it often happens right around your ceremony. The timing couldn’t be better.
2. No Sweat, No Stress - Just Cool, Calm Comfort
Living in South Africa, I see it all the time: Grooms sweating through their suits, hair completely drenched. Brides fanning themselves under layers of fabric, makeup touch-ups every 15 minutes, and hair sticking to their backs. Summer weddings are hot, often too hot.
Winter weddings, on the other hand, mean no sweat stains, no heatstroke, and no guests baking in the sun during Canapés. You and your partner can actually relax and enjoy the day without constantly worrying about overheating.
And here’s the best part: there’s almost zero chance of rain during winter in the Highveld (yes, we’re looking at you, Gauteng and surrounding areas). Clear skies and dry air make it one of the most reliable seasons to plan an outdoor ceremony or open-air photoshoot.
3. More Time on The Dance Floor
One of my favourite hidden perks of a winter wedding? The party starts earlier.
Since the sun sets around 5:30pm in winter, the reception naturally begins earlier, which means you’re on the dance floor by 7 or 8pm rather than waiting until 10pm for things to kick off after formalities.
And let’s be honest: it’s cold outside, so guests are more likely to stay inside, where the music is playing and the dance floor is warm. No one wants to linger around outside when Sean Kingston is calling. You'll have ALL your guests partying with you!
4. More Availability (& Sometimes Better Pricing)
Because most couples don’t consider winter, you’re far more likely to find your dream venue, photographer, florist or DJ available, and sometimes even at lower rates.
Less demand often means more flexibility, and more budget left over for those extra touches (like live music or a honeymoon upgrade!).
5. Open-Air Receptions = Winter Romance
If you’ve been dreaming of a reception under the stars, early May and August are perfect.
The chill in the air isn’t freezing, and you can get creative with open-air seating, fairy lights, bonfires, and cozy blankets. It brings a storybook charm to your wedding that’s nearly impossible to recreate in peak summer heat.
6. Bonus Tip! The BEST Honeymoon Timing
Another hidden win? The honeymoon.
If you’re staying local, South Africa’s winter lends itself to the most romantic, cozy getaways. Think fireplaces, red wine, mountain cabins, or luxury safari lodges with hot tubs and views for days. The kind of setting where you can fully unwind, slow down, and soak up that just-married bliss without even having to travel much.
And if you’re jetting off to Europe or beyond? You're in for a treat. A winter wedding here means you'll be arriving in Europe’s peak summer season. Warm evenings, bustling outdoor cafés, golden beaches and ice-cold beers or cocktails in the sun.
So whether you’re cuddled up in the Cape or exploring Italy’s Amalfi Coast, your wedding-to-honeymoon transition will feel beautifully timed.
These kinds of weddings are some of my favourites. Intimate, atmospheric, and so beautifully South African.
Disclaimer:
Winter weddings in Gauteng are known for being dry and clear, and while rain is extremely rare in the Highveld during winter, nature always has the final say. I always recommend having a gentle backup plan for extreme wind or unexpected weather, just in case.
That said, I’ve shot dozens of winter weddings and only a handful have had even a hint of weather drama, unlike some of those summer rainstorms!
